Scores protest outside Downing Street against air strikes in Syria

The U.S., Britain and France coordinated to launch strikes against targets within Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The bombing represents a major escalation in the West's confrontation with Assad's superpower ally Russian Federation, but is unlikely to alter the course of a multi-sided war which has killed at least half a million people in the past seven years.

Here's what we know so far about the strikes.

Douma was the last rebel-held town in the Eastern Ghouta suburb of Damascus, and is the site of the alleged gas attack that prompted a volley of Western air strikes on Saturday.

President Trump said Saturday morning airstrikes in Syria overnight were "perfectly executed", hours after he announced the US, United Kingdom and France launched precision missile strikes in Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria last weekend. "Hopefully, someday we'll get along with Russian Federation, and maybe even Iran - but maybe not", he said. USA officials have said they have blood tests from civilians in Douma that prove the Assad regime used chemical weapons.

Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking Assad, who is also supported by Iran, and says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma, a town near Damascus which had been held by rebels until this month. She described it as a "limited and targeted strike" aimed at minimising civilian casualties. She said the use of force was "right and legal" in this case.

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow's ambassador to the United Nations, said he "cannot exclude" war between the United States and Russian Federation. "So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime".

The joint operation came one week after a suspected chemical attack outside Damascus left more than 40 people dead.

"The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed", he said.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, Joint Chief of Staff, said the strikes were carried out on three Syrian chemical weapons infrastructures and the US believed it would send al-Assad a strong message.

"We are confident that all of our missiles reached their targets", McKenzie added.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he ordered a strike on Syria in response to last weekend's chemical weapons attack. A USA official told Reuters that Tomahawk cruise missiles also were involved.

"The United States and its allies have no proof and, without even waiting for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to take a position, have carried out this military attack", said the foreign ministry in a statement.

"The aggression is a flagrant violation of global law, a breach of the worldwide community's will, and it is doomed to fail", said state news agency SANA.

Among the more bombastic tweets was that of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham who wrote, "We should apply "3 strikes, you're out" to the butcher of Damascus". But some leading Democrats questioned the legality of the US strikes, saying that only Congress has the constitutional responsibility "for making war".

"All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris". "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

"A large part of its chemical arsenal has been destroyed".

"Russia's Foreign Ministry described the strikes as an "outrageous violation" of global law".

Iran's Foreign Ministry has also strongly condemned the airstrikes and warned of its regional consequences.

Two US officials said attacks could continue beyond tonight, with a senior administration official saying "this isn't over". "Those responsible must be brought to justice", he said.

Johnson said: "The world is united in its disgust for any use of chemical weapons, but especially against civilians".

Trump, while addressing the nation on Friday night, said the joint strike with France and the United Kingdom was now underway.
