Jacob Zuma was defiant yesterday as he appeared in court to face corruption charges which have dogged his scandal-ridden nine years in power. Judge Themba Sishi approved the request.

A court in April 2016 said that the NPA's decision to withdraw the charges was irrational and made under political pressure, adding that Mr Zuma should face the charges as outlined in the indictment.

Zuma is now standing trial in his home province of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Zuma, who resigned in February after losing the support of his party, the African National Congress (ANC), denies any wrongdoing.

The former South African president gave the thumbs up during the 90-minute court appearance to supporters who were waving and smiling at him throughout.

He was the victim of a political conspiracy in 2007, when he was charged with fraud and corruption, he was a victim of "the West" during his presidency, and he was the victim of state-capture propaganda before his grudging resignation.

Opposition parties are suing to force Zuma to pay back his legal fees, and to block the government from paying future ones.

Bishop Ndlela, of the United Methodist Church, said religious leaders attended Friday's rally to show Zuma that he was not alone.

The corruption charges were recently reinstated after being thrown out almost a decade ago and relate to an arms deal in the 1990s, when Zuma was deputy president. "They want to shut my mouth", he said, calling for radical economic transformation and the return of land from white people to black South Africans.

Zuma's appearance so soon after leaving office was striking in a continent with a history of top officials in various countries being criticized for alleged corruption, sometimes running into tens of millions of dollars, but where few ex-presidents have faced justice.
