Tarrant County Woman Gets 5 Years In Prison for Illegal Voting

Texas woman sentenced to five years for voting illegally in 2016 presidential elections

A Texas woman was sentenced to five years in prison for voting in the 2016 presidential election when she was ineligible because she was on probation.

Mason asserted that she was never told by any authority that the act of voting was prohibited until she had finished serving her sentence; that includes "the federal court, her supervision officer, the election workers or U.S. District Judge John McBryde".

In 2011, Mason pleaded guilty to fraud charges stemming from a tax preparation company that she owned with her husband, according to reports.

The 43-year-old Mason says she had no idea she was committing a crime. Prosecutors said she signed the form with the intent to vote illegally, but Mason's attorney called it a mistake. "I was trying to get more money back for my clients".

"I find it unbelievable that the government feels she made this up", her attorney, J. Warren St. John told the court, according to the Star-Telegram. I took accountability for that.

Mason insists that she did not know she was not eligible to vote and wouldn't have risked returning to prison. Some states allow people to vote once they are released from prison, while others, like Texas, force them to complete all aspects of their sentences before they can vote again.

"I was happy enough to come home and see my daughter graduate", she continued. My son is about to graduate. "That's being honest. I'll never vote again", she told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"You think I would jeopardize my freedom?"

Mason was escorted to jail following her sentence.

St. John said he plans to file an appeal and that Mason, who was taken into custody on Wednesday, is now out of jail on a $20,000 bond.

When Mason showed up at the polling station, she say that her name was not on the voter role.

"Mason, who spent almost three years in federal prison for inflating returns as part of a tax preparation business she ran with her ex-husband, 'owned up" to her previous wrongdoing and said she would never intentionally try to skirt voting laws.

She had gone to vote at her mother's insistence and brought her driver's license as identification, according to her testimony. Rosa Maria Ortega was given an eight-year sentence last year after she voted in 2012 and 2014, also in Tarrant County.
