What the Facebook scandal says about our social media addiction

Govt issues show cause notice to Facebook over data breach row

The device was supposed to be revealed in May during Facebook's F8 conference, but the company made a decision to postpone it due to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Settings also allows you to change who can see your posts, tag you in photos, what ads are targeted to you, and disable facial recognition.

Facebook has for years given advertisers the option of targeting their ads based on data collected by companies such as Acxiom Corp and Experian PLC.

The social network's chief privacy officer, Erin Egan, wrote in a blogpost that the company wanted to put users "in control" of their personal data following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

It also comes just weeks before the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect.

The Menlo Park, California-based social networking company has been under extreme pressure recently following reports that data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica allegedly used information on more than 50 million users without their consent in order to aid the Trump campaign for targeted political ads in the 2016 USA presidential race.

Jennifer Grygiel, a Syracuse University professor of communications, said the new privacy settings and tools "are so obviously important to users that one has to wonder why this wasn't already done".

In a blog post titled "It's Time to Make Our Privacy Tools Easier to Find", the company "reminds" users how to do things like secure their account, control personal information, choose which ads are displayed, and manage who can view their posts and profile. Playboy says the alleged data mismanagement is the last straw.

"You can review what you've shared and delete it if you want to".

"We'll also update our data policy to better spell out what data we collect and how we use it", the blog post said. In January, the social media giant killed off Facebook M, its digital assistant that lived within Messenger. Although Facebook said that it stopped the practice that allowed the Trump-linked firm to collect so much personal data from the platform, the episode highlighted popular unease about the site's obtuse privacy settings and vulnerability to scammers, fake news merchants, and other bad actors. Zuckerberg is aware there is intense pressure on him to testify, this person says.

Facebook is also making it easier to download the data users have shared on the platform, and even move it to another service. "The result is that we're more likely to exist in echo chambers and be exposed to more and more narrow slices of news", said Michael Stefanone, Ph.D., a University at Buffalo communication department associate professor.

A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to BuzzFeed News, "We are strongly committed to protecting people's information".
