Uber Won't Renew Permit for Self-Driving Cars in California

Arizona's governor has suspended self-driving Uber cars from the state's public roads

Uber said it informed California's Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday that it decided not to renew its autonomous vehicle testing permit - meaning it's indefinitely stopping its self-driving auto program in the state.

In a Tuesday letter to Uber, the California Department of Motor Vehicles formally acknowledged that Uber will not seek to renew its autonomous vehicle permit in the state, which is due to expire at the end of March 2018.

Last week, for the first time, a pedestrian was killed by one of Uber's self-driving cars.

The departure comes a week after an Uber autonomous vehicle struck and killed a woman crossing a street in Arizona.

In a statement, they said: "We remain fully invested in and excited about the future of Uber Freight". On Monday, Arizona officially suspended Uber's self-driving vehicle tests in the state despite that Uber had already paused its operations there.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: "We proactively suspended our self-driving operations, including in California, immediately following the Tempe incident". "Given this, we chose to not reapply for a California permit with the understanding that our self-driving vehicles would not operate in the state in the immediate future".

"I have always said I have two years left on my contract, that I'm good there", he said ahead of Belgium's friendly against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Uber initially applied to renew its permit a few days after the crash.

Meanwhile, new details have emerged about Arizona's aggressive courting of Uber's self-driving tests, and vice versa.

Last week, Uber suspended testing in several cities, including San Francisco, Toronto and Pittsburgh.

"The incident that took place on March 18 is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation", Ducey said. There could have been a software failure in the Uber auto, said Richard Murray, an engineering professor at California's Institute of Technology and the former head of Caltech's student self-driving team. Recent figures for testing licenses show that companies such as Apple Inc., Tesla Inc. and Waymo Inc. had more test cars on California's roads. Ontario's Ministry of Transportation said that the state is watching developments in Arizona and will decide to do based on Uber's operation in the state.

To calm fears over a self-driving auto accident being replicated in South Korea, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated controls are in place to ensure road safety during vehicle tests. The National Transportation Safety Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are working with Tempe police on the investigation.
