Betsy DeVos Says She's 'Misunderstood,' Then Struggles To Explain Her Own Policies

Betsy DeVos' Embarrassing 60 Minutes Interview Is What Happens When You're Not Qualified for the Job

It wouldn't have taken an oracle to figure out that the education secretary would be asked about schools in her home state on 60 Minutes, but DeVos was somehow wildly unprepared for the question. After one year in office, she sat down on Sunday to conduct an interview with CBS 60 Minutes veteran journalist Lesley Stahl to discuss her nomination and current initiatives on education.

While DeVos maintained that addressing gun violence in schools is an urgent matter, noting that she's heading up a task force to observe what states are doing to protect students, Stahl balked, saying "this sounds like talking instead of acting".

Stahl: Have you seen the really bad schools?

In the tense exchange, correspondent Lesley Stahl questioned whether it's wise to remove funds from public schools and inject them into charter schools, as DeVos had a hand in doing in MI. She said she met Tuesday afternoon with DeVos, who chairs the federal commission on school safety unveiled by the White House earlier this week. When asked why schools are still underperforming there despite her efforts, she gave non-answers that showed she had no data and no valid argument.

After DeVos said that "billions and billions and billions" of dollars have been invested in public schools with "zero results", Stahl noted that test scores have risen over the last 25 years.

"Maybe I should", DeVos said. But it is unclear why DeVos thought they should have been used by Stahl.

Nina Rees, CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, declared a year ago that the debate over charter schools was "over" and that charter schools were unequivocally better than their traditional counterparts.

And don't make things worse by trying to claim that there are "lots of pockets" where things are going well.

Assad regime said to cut off largest town in rebel-held Ghouta
According to the United Nations , some 400,000 people remain trapped in the area, which has been under siege for several years. "The bomb shelters and basements are full, and people are sleeping in the streets and in public gardens", the statement said.

She repeated vague statements assuring her commitment to "advanc [ing] ways in which schools can be made safer for students", as she told Fox News hosts during another interview on Monday morning, and said "everything is on the table" in terms of policy proposals.

DeVos' passion for school and community choice also transferred into how she views school safety.

DEVOS: I'm not so sure exactly how that happened. "Scores are stagnant. Students need more options, and we must rethink our approach to education".

DEVOS: - I'm more misunderstood than anything. Both she and "60 Minutes" are known quantities, and DeVos accepted the interview. She comes across as largely out of touch with the problems plaguing the education system in the country.

STAHL: Are you in any way, do you think, suggesting that the number of false accusations are as high as the number of actual rapes or assaults? Due to the uncertainty, public debate could continue as DeVos' Education Department continues its pro-school choice agenda to the dismay of opponents like the NEA. It's worth noting that during DeVos's confirmation hearing before the Senate education committee in January 2017, she said, "I believe there is a lot that has gone right in Detroit and MI with regard to charter schools." Sen. "DeVos is an embarrassment to responsible education choice and reform movements".

DeVos also said that "one sexual assault is one too many, but "one falsely accused individual is one too many".

The interview is a painful watch - from beginning to end.

According to the Washington Post, Throughout the interview, Stahl asked pointed questions to Devos. When Stahl presented her with evidence to the contrary, DeVos shrugged it off.
