Clemson coach responds to Louisville having 2013 national title vacated

Greg Postel

The NCAA announced Tuesday that the Cardinals must vacate all wins from the 2011-12 to 2014-15 seasons and return the money it received in revenue-sharing agreements with the NCAA in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 as a fine. Louisville, who has been part of a major scandal that has to do with bribery, strippers and a bunch of other bad stuff, was ordered to vacate its 2013 national title. "The violations in the case resulted in some men's basketball student-athletes competing while ineligible". It becomes the first men's basketball championship in NCAA history to be struck down.

Postel did say in a news conference Tuesday afternoon, as tweeted by the Courier Journal, that "people don't send their kids to a university to do these kind of things". This is college sports, where anyone is free to claim whatever they want, so long as the NCAA hasn't already ruled against it, as is Louisville's predicament.

In his comments about the NCAA's ruling Tuesday, interim university president Greg Postel seemed nearly resigned to the penalties.

"At the end of the day, we've got to win a couple of these games, there's no question about it", Padgett said.

Pitino made a deal with his team during that magical season that, if his players took home the championship, he would get a tattoo to pay homage to the feat.

He was sensational in the final round Saturday at Staples Center , when he missed only five of 25 shots. That went to Mitchell, who won over the crowd with his tributes to Carter and Griffith.

The program was also stripped of 123 wins from 2012 to 2015 after an NCAA investigation found that a member of the coaching staff had provided prostitutes and strippers to players and recruits. The school appealed the original decision, which was handed down past year by the NCAA.

So, less than five years later, the Dome has been imploded through no fault of its own, and Louisville's national title has gone up in smoke, too, through much fault of its own. It also singled out former coach Rick Pitino, who was sacked last fall after a federal fraud investigation implicated Louisville in still another massive scandal. "Instead, it was ignored".

"This dark cloud has hung over our heads for more than two years, and it has had a negative impact on our athletics program, our fans and the entire university family", he added. Louisville appealed in August in a 68-page response that called the punishment "Draconian" and said the NCAA "abused its authority" in punishing the program ... crazy, since it's one of the few times the organization actually, finally used its authority correctly.

Moreover, these changes would likely be permanent, as the NCAA played hard ball in Louisville's case.
