Russian cargo ship takes off for space station

This uncrewed cargo mission plans to deliver three tons of food fuel and other supplies

To support and facilitate a transition to a commercially-focused platform in the mid 2020s, one in which NASA could be one of several users, "the administration is proposing to end direct federal support for the ISS in 2025 under the current NASA-directed operating model".

Acting director Lightfoot said the budget includes $150 million to begin "ramping up" efforts to encourage commercial partners - like SpaceX and Orbital ATK - to take over US space and science operations occurring in low-Earth orbit. The unmanned resupply and refueling freighter will deliver three tons of cargo, propellant and water to the six crew now aboard the International Space Station (ISS). "Turning off the lights and walking away from our sole outpost in space at a time when we're pushing the frontiers of exploration makes no sense".

The ISS could theoretically survive beyond 2025, if someone else picks up the tab; the budget request does not mention de-orbiting the $100 billion station when the government money runs out.

The budget request, which was released today (Feb. 12), allocates about $19.9 billion to NASA, an increase of $370 million over last year's request.

"The ISS is built for science and human exploration, it's not built for profit seeking", quipped Andrew Rush, the chief executive of Made In Space.

Boeing, along with Elon Musk's SpaceX, are both in the process of developing crew transportation systems to enable US astronauts to travel on an American-made space vehicle-currently the USA pays Russian Federation $80 million per seat to travel on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft. The government has cited higher priorities at the US space agency for backing the cancellation.

The internal NASA document has scant details over how the privatization of the station would work.

"Their momentum continues this year toward the first integrated launch of the system in fiscal year 2020 around the Moon and a mission with crew in 2023", Mr Lightfoot said.

A complete transfer to the commercial sector is a different matter, however.

The NASA document notes that the station's worldwide partners are each at a different state in planning for operations of the ISS beyond 2024.

Lightfoot ended things by saying we are once again on a path to return to the Moon with an eye towards Mars. The Trump administration instead envisions "the emergence of an environment in [low Earth orbit] where NASA is one of many customers of a non-governmental human space flight managed and operated the enterprise while providing a smooth and uninterrupted transition".

The WFIRST telescope's cost estimates have ballooned to $3.6 billion and Hunter said it just got too expensive.

NASA Acting Administrator, Robert Lightfoot gave the address and was nothing but optimistic and confident, starting things off by saying "American will lead the way back to the moon and take the next giant leap from where we made the first small step almost 50 years ago".
