Ahed Tamimi remains in Israeli prison as "trial" adjourned

Army Abducts Sixteen Palestinians In The West Bank

Ahed Tamimi, then 16, was recorded by her mother shoving and shouting at two Israeli soldiers in the driveway of her family home in Nabi Salih in the West Bank on December 15, 2017. Later that day, Ahed confronted Israeli soldiers when they forced themselves into the courtyard of her family's home.

The judge ordered the proceedings to be held behind closed doors and journalists were removed from the Ofer military base near Ramallah, despite a request by the defence lawyer for the media to be allowed to observe proceedings.

The statement from Amnesty International goes on to note that Tamimi's detention is not unique and that the Israeli army now has roughly 350 Palestinian children in custody and is "subjecting them to ill-treatment, including blindfolding, threats, solitary confinement and interrogations without the presence of their lawyers or family members". "The Israeli authorities must release her without delay".

Trials of minors in military court are typically closed, but Tamimi's lawyer said previous hearings for the teenager were open and she argued for it to remain that way.

Tamimi, who turned 17 in prison last month, was led into a courtroom packed with journalists, several European diplomats and members of her family.

"None of the facts of this case would appear to justify her ongoing detention prior to her trial, particularly given the concerns expressed by the Committee on the Rights of the Child about the use of pre-trial detention and detention on remand", Lynk added. Her 20-year-old cousin Nur Tamimi and mother, who were also in the video, were both later arrested and are also facing charges. The teen is charged with aggravated assault relating to an incident in the West Bank in December. Images of the female soldier's bloody face circulated on social media after she was injured by shattered windshield glass.

Ahed Tamimi's father Bessem Tamimi stated: "We need the people and the audience with us to see what happens because we do not trust this court, and we do not trust this system".

Ahed's lawyer accuses the military of breaking the United Nations convention on the rights of a child during her nighttime arrest and interrogation, during which she says Ahed was threatened.

Some commentators claim that what is disproportionate is the global attention devoted to the incident, even suggesting that it was a cynical ploy meant to distract world public opinion due to the failure of Hamas to deliver on its call for a third intifada in response to Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and so move the U.S. Embassy.

According to NBC Connecticut anchor Kevin Nathan , Emily "is very sore, but she does not have any broken bones". She was in her fourth run and in curve 9 when she lost control of the sled, bounced around and crashed.

The hearing Tuesday lasted two hours and her next session will be March 11.

"From Trayvon Martin to Muhammad Abu Khudair and Kalief Browder to Ahed Tamimi - racism, state violence and mass incarceration have robbed our people of their childhoods and their futures", the public figures say, likening Israel's persecution of Ahed and other children to the state violence that has taken the lives and freedom of African American youths.

Human rights groups have protested the minor's imprisonment and demanded she be released for the period of her trial. If charged as an adult, she could face 10 years in prison.

Senior Israeli government officials called for a harsh punishment. Ahed's trial in an Israeli military court began on 13 February.

"Human rights organizations must investigate!"

"The military courts themselves are one of the most injurious mechanisms of the occupation and are not created to seek justice or truth, but to maintain the occupation", Amit Gilutz, spokesperson for Israeli rights group B'Tselem, told Al-Jazeera Tuesday after Ahed's secret trial.

Mohammed Tamimi, a cousin of Ahed, was seriously wounded by a rubber bullet fired at his head during those protests.

Video from the attack shows the mob haranguing and attacking the soldiers as they cried out.
