Shani Davis: American speedskater upset he won't flag-bearer during Opening Ceremony

In a Thursday tweet, champion speed skater Shani Davis - who is black -injected race into the coin flip decision over which athlete would carry the USA flag during the opening ceremonies. She's also the first American woman to win a world championship in luge.

In the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy, Davis became the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual event after finishing first in the 1000-meters.

The opening ceremony for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics will take place Friday. The message described as "dishonorable" the process by which luge athlete Erin Hamlin was picked to carry the flag. Erin won via a coin toss. No problem. I can wait until 2022. She wasn't a shoe-in for flag-bearer, however, The Washington Post reports.

Hamlin announced previous year that she plans to retire after the PyeongChang Olympics.

He also included a hashtag noting that it was Black History Month.

Perhaps its not surprising that Davis will be joined in Pyeongchang by the first two African-American women to make the USA speedskating team — Erin Jackson on the big oval and Maame Biney in short track. But the voting for the finalist deadlocked between the final two athletes and as previously agreed upon by all participants a coin toss was used to break the tie. The luge star became the first USA athlete to medal in singles luge since the event's inception in 1964.

"The nerves will be flying, for sure", said Hamlin, who will be competing in her fourth Winter Games.

But lets remember: The choice of flag bearer goes beyond mere athletic accomplishment. A question we always have, however, is who will be representing the country by leading the Team USA pack while holding the flag. “Hes not selfish at all.”.

Hamlin, 31, is one of the best of the best when it comes to the luge.

It shouldnt come down to the flip of a coin.
