BC wine ban not good for business

Grande Prairie's mayor Bill Given said the disagreement between premiers does not necessarily reflect the stance of municipal politicians in Alberta and B.C

A sizable portion of B.C. beef production is sent to Alberta for finishing, which is the sort of thing that one might expect the province's agriculture minister to know. He maintains his focus right now is on this month's budget. "For a leader of a government to goad another jurisdiction to take action against another is provocative".

The federal position appears both hypocritical and nonsensical, and therefore impossible to reconcile according to Toronto Star National Affairs Columnist Thomas Walkom (https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/2018/02/02/bc-pipeline-faceoff-underscores-justin-trudeaus-climate-change-contradictions.html): "The latest pipeline faceoff.is more than a constitutional tussle.it is a reminder that the core of (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's climate-change) policy - the assertion that carbon emissions can be adequately reduced without significant economic cost - is simply not true".

"The tools in her toolbox that she is now looking for will be her decisions and her government's decision to make, and whether or not they are appropriate or not I am not going to judge, but they certainly do speak to the severity of the issue and the importance of the issue that the B.C. government has started", he said.

"I take that very seriously, and I will be resolute in protecting the interests of this great province".

"We are a small family-run business and it's a huge amount of our volume that we project for the year and is now selling". "When it comes to our rights, my rights as the premier to consult with British Columbians about putting in place protections for our environment and our economy, I see no ground for Premier [Notley] to stand on".

"It feels like we're an easy target because everyone likes wine", she said.

"We stand with our wine industry", he said. "I mean, to tell me that I have to apply to export my wine to Alberta is nothing short of ludicrous". "I deliberately wasn't available to you yesterday because I don't think it's in anyone's interests to have duelling premiers". Enough what-ifs to make you wonder: if we're increasing the volume and frequency of transport of a unsafe hydrocarbon toxic to all life forms, therefore statistically increasing the probability of a serious spill, why wouldn't we know the answers beforehand?

Stores and restaurants will continue to pour the products and the Alberta warehouses will continue to ship the remaining stock they have.

If the point of the British Columbia government's continuing tantrums against bitumen pipelines is to get proponent Kinder Morgan Canada Ltd.to quit in frustration, it's not working.

Vancouver-based Visual Capitalist entrepreneur Nick Routley said Alberta's boycott was counterproductive regardless of what side of the pipeline fight people are on.

During Notley's Tuesday announcement, she stated the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission would immediately halt all imports of BC wine.

Trudeau said in Edmonton last week he wasn't going to wade into "disagreements between the provinces in this case" but that his government approved the pipeline and was going to get it built.

"I think that if there is [an] ongoing dispute between Alberta and British Columbia there is definitely a role for the federal government to step in and help resolve the dispute". In the meantime, she said Albertans can buy "some terrific Alberta craft beer instead".

Whatever happens, the dispute offers Trudeau big risk and reward, said Tom Bateman, associate political science professor at New Brunswick's St. Thomas University.

Conservative MP Lisa Raitt says it's time for Trudeau to do something.
