Home Secretary declares pardons for jailed women to be complicated

Men and women campaigning at a suffragette meeting in London's Hyde Park

It's been 100 years since women won the right to vote.

The working-class suffrage movement is something that I am particularly interested in, as really, these are the women who the vote affected the most.

New Zealand led the way on votes for women in 1893, followed by Australia, Finland and Norway, but Britain's global standing meant its move had global repercussions.

The move has been backed by opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, as well as descendents of those involved and equality campaigners.

"Voting was a value judgment, not an intrinsic right", she wrote in Tuesday's the Daily Telegraph.

The UK suffragette movement was formed around the Women's Social and Political Union which campaigned for the political and economic emancipation of women.

'They made such sacrifices so that we could all enjoy the rights we have today. "In any meaningful sense of the word, they were not criminals". But pardoning the suffragettes would be wrong.

'It just shows how desperate the situation was at the time. But the suffragists failed to get results, and many campaigners decided a more militant approach was required.

Prof June Purvis of the University of Portsmouth has collected many postcards printed with anti-suffrage messages and imagery. When Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903, it was the beginning of a revolution.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Rudd said: "It's something that I will look at".

'What they did was absolutely extraordinary and it is why I am here today'.

Asked earlier by the BBC what she would say to the critics: "I put a much greater focus on not what you say but on what you do, and I guess that is another difference perhaps between women sometimes and men".

Today, we are celebrating the right of women to vote, to have a say in their society's future.

A witness told Reuters that the man drove around the city randomly picking out Black men and women on the streets. The 28-year-old stood for the far-right Northern League party in elections last year but failed to win any votes.

Women's suffrage in Gulf States have lagged behind the rest of the world, with Oman the first to loosen the law in 1994, followed by Qatar in 1999. "Convictions of Suffragettes were politically motivated and bore no relation to the acts committed", Mr. Corbyn said in a press release.

He said: "Labour in government will both pardon the suffragettes and give an official apology for the miscarriages of justice and wider persecution they suffered".

In Europe, Finland became the first European country to introduce women's suffrage in 1906.

The 1918 act gave permission to cast a ballot to women over 30 and with a property qualification - and men over the age of 21 - but it was also about evoking a change in politics which was underpinned by women's broad interests.

She added: "We now face the prospect of our country's public debate becoming oppressively hostile and participation in it a risk which many are unprepared to run".

Prime Minister Theresa May leaves after attending a church service near her constituency. A Sikh princess, Sophia Duleep Singh, threw herself in front of the prime minister's auto.

It seemed that not even all suffragettes could agree on their methods that they should use, however, with Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel having broken away from the group in 1907 to form the Women's Freedom League. She was a trained artist and designed numerous group's posters, leaflets and logos.

"Intersectional feminism is the only feminism, if we want to make real change", said Hall.

And Labour is holding its shadow cabinet meeting at the Museum of London, where a large "Votes for Women" exhibition has just opened.

The academic said there was "common ground" between Suffragism and groups such as the recent #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.

Emily Wilding Davison was one such woman.

To memorialise her rebellious night in parliament, Tony Benn broke the rules by screwing a plaque into the wall of her cupboard.

Her exploits included sneaking in through the front door of 10 Downing Street as her colleagues distracted police, and sailing a boat up to the Houses of Parliament so she could address MPs on the terrace. At least two suffragettes are reported to have died.
