China, Iran, Russia Lash Out At US Nuclear Policy Plan

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon left Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan and Deputy Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette lead a news conference on the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review

But because of North Korea's boasting that its nuclear warheads can now reach any city on the United States mainland, President Trump has ordered a second look at the USA nuclear program.

"Our strategy will ensure Russian Federation understands that any use of nuclear weapons, however limited, is unacceptable", the document said.

When the Obama administration did its own reset of the strategy in 2010, it argued the world could be made safer if the USA reduced the role of nuclear weapons in defense strategy.

Yet when President called on Congress to "modernize and rebuild our nuclear arsenal" in his State of the Union address last week, he did not mention his administration's rationale: that President of Russian Federation has accelerated a risky game that the United States must match, even if the price tag soars above $1.2 trillion.

He accused Russia, China and North Korea of boosting their nuclear stockpiles and "raising the prominence of nuclear weapons in their security strategies". When it was signed eight years ago, President Barack Obama expressed hope that it would be a small first step toward deeper reductions, and ultimately a world without nuclear weapons.

The US military has proposed diversifying its nuclear arsenal and developing new, smaller atomic bombs, largely to counter Russian Federation.

The strategy marks a resounding win for backers of the USA nuclear enterprise and a setback for disarmament advocates.

His statement comes after the Trump administration published a document about its renewed nuclear policy on Friday, 2 February.

A senior administration official, who would discuss the policy only on the condition of anonymity, said Trump had been briefed on the new nuclear approach but was leaving the details to Mattis and to his national security adviser, Lt. Gen. HR McMaster.

The United States would spend $1.2 trillion over the next 30 years on the nuclear weapons.

Perry has also said adversaries could confuse the cruise missile the Pentagon is developing for a conventional missile.

Pulling out of the 1987 treaty "would allow the United States to develop and deploy short and medium-range cruise missiles against China as well as against Russia", Freeman explained.

The report says China has added new types of nuclear capabilities - ranging from a mobile intercontinental ballistic missile to a new ballistic missile submarine - "with little to no transparency into its intentions". Most of that money would go to new generations of bombers and new submarines, and a rebuilding of the land-based nuclear missile force that still dots giant fields across the West. Like Obama, Trump would consider using nuclear weapons only in "extreme circumstances", while maintaining a degree of ambiguity about what that means.

"Some in that room may think that we should just put our heads in the sand and ignore the threats that are being faced out there and just let Russian Federation and China and North Korea continue to do what they are doing", Wood told reporters outside the conference hall.

Robert Soofer, a senior nuclear policy official at the Pentagon who helped direct the policy review, said Moscow is likely to push back on the US plan for fielding those two additional weapons.

Russian Federation on Monday said it has met the nuclear-arsenal limits of a key arms-control treaty, but it raised some issues with how the United States has sought to comply with the 2010 accord.
