Burger King Serves Up Net Neutrality Explainer by Slowing Down the Whopper

Burger King YouTube

The repeal of net neutrality rule could see an internet service provider charge customers more if they want to stream videos, a scenario Burger King wanted to satirise and explore.

"You got the slow-access Whopper pass", a server tells a flustered customer wondering where his burger is.

The ad makes a statement about the Federal Communications Commission's recent repeal of net neutrality rules.

What is even more alarming is that there are still people who don't know what Net Neutrality is or how it being repealed could affect them in the long run.

In a short video posted to YouTube, the fast food chain conducted an experiment with customers, asking them to pay on a sliding scale for the speed at which they want their meal. When we asked the company why it decided to make this ad, it said, "We believe the internet should be like Burger King restaurants". "A spokeswoman declined to say Wednesday if it would launch or join one later".

In the video, customers, unaware of the prank, were alarmed to suddenly find that their usual Whopper sandwich orders would be made at a slower "mbps", which the fast-food chain twists to mean "making burgers per second".

Burger King restaurants are independent franchisees but the brand is owned by Restaurant Brands International, (QSR.TO) based in Ontario, Canada. "It's stupid, but true", another said.

This week, Montana became the first state to bar telecommunications companies from receiving state contracts if they interfere with internet traffic or favor higher-paying sites or apps.

The clip closes with Burger King's royal King mascot drinking out of an overized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup mug, just like the one that FCC chairman Ajit Pai has caught heat for using.

Net neutrality can be a very complicated and confusing concept at times.

Anyone who would like to help keep net neutrality safe can head over to Change.org to sign the petition in support.

Net neutrality is now in hospice care-not quite dead, but the future is grim.
