Intel recommends PC users avoid their Spectre patch

Intel provides reboot issue guidance

Several days ago, Intel disclosed issues surrounding the update for fixing the recent Meltdown and Spectre flaws are actually causing problems on some systems.

There have been numerous reports of issues with the various patches issued by vendors, including Intel.

"We ask that our industry partners focus efforts on testing early versions of the updated solution so we can accelerate its release", Navin Shenoy, general manager of Intel's data center group, said in a posting on the company's website. Specifically, it is causing unexpected reboot issues.

The firm says the patches, which began rolling out recently, were also resulting in unpredictable system behaviour.

She tried a between-the-legs shot for the first time in a tour-level match. "First set, I thought I had everything under control". Estonia's Anett Kontaveit shrugged off a torrid second set meltdown to knock seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko out.

France And UK Work Through Border Issues In Summit
Currently, British border checks are carried out at Calais under the 2003 Le Touquet Agreement between the two countries. When it comes to Europe , these two countries are pulling in radically different directions.

Intel initially believed the reboot problem was limited to firmware updated systems running its older Broadwell and Haswell CPUs.

"We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current [patch] versions", reads the statement, "as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior".

Now Shenoy says Intel has "identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and made good progress in developing a solution to address it". Intel's only said that more details for regarding when the Haswell/Broadwell fix would arriving later this week. It also advised customers of certain systems (a full list is here) to stop deploying the patches until the updated patches are released. "I assure you we are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues". Recent statements from Intel and Microsoft confirm that some patches may cause a reduction in system performance, as patching the vulnerabilities means fiddling with processes that are created to speed up CPU performance.

And, hopefully, those left out in the cold by Intel should soon (Intel promises!) have a fix coming their way.
