Facebook Moves To Decide What Is Real News

The move signals that, in an effort to combat the problem of fake news, the social media giant is willing to play a kind of editorial role - making decisions based on substance, not just how viral a headline may be.

In a statement posted on the platform, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote that posts from news publications will still make up small amount percentage on a user's news feed (about four percent). "That's why it's important that News Feed promotes high quality news that helps build a sense of common ground".

Facebook won't be assessing the trustworthiness of news outlets itself.

Translated from Utopian-speak, that means they are going to give higher ranking in their almighty algorithm to posts shared by friends and family while knocking news outlets down a few rungs.

He also announced that Facebook would shrink the content on its News Feed from 5 percent to 4 percent.

Facebook wasn't the only one putting time and money into getting news onto their network, media outlets spent millions chasing after coveted eyeballs by tailoring content and publishing directly to the "news" feed. Trump appropriated the term soon after by using it on his critics in the media, but Facebook has remained under scrutiny for how users can be exposed to news and news-related content, a portion of which was apparently produced with help from Russians trying to influence the election.

Meanwhile, Facebook - and the broader tech industry - has come under a barrage of criticism over its impact on society, from its role in spreading Russian propaganda and misinformation during the 2016 USA presidential election to its effects on the mental health of children. "We could try to make that decision ourselves, but that's not something we were comfortable with".

"The hard question we've struggled with is how to decide what news sources are broadly trusted in a world with so much division". "It will only shift the balance of news you see towards sources that are determined to be trusted by the community".
