LG Unveils 88-Inch 8K OLED TV, First In The World

We're now seeing a growth 4K TVs and HDR content that is slowly but surely going mainstream. We've reviewed OLED 4K HDR TVs here at 4K.com repeatedly and nearly without variation, our analysis of them has been exceptionally positive. We now know that LG will kick things off with a showstopper 88-inch OLED television with an 8K display. Regarding the said limit to OLED's ability to adopt 8K at 33 megapixels per inch, which is four times the resolution of 4K displays, LG Display says it managed to come up with the 88-inch panel using an innovative process it developed on its own.

The QLED TV stands for Quantum Dot television sets, which are supposed to be brighter, more vibrant than regular OLED, though it comes with the sacrifice of contrast ratios, which is better on OLED displays. The 88-in surpasses the current largest OLED screen by 11-in and massively ups its resolution to 7680 x 4320. Brands like LG, Sony and Panasonic already offer 77-inch TVs.

This, if not the size alone, makes one wonder if the new TV is just to showcase the technological might of the company or if it is really meant for a commercial launch anytime soon.

As such, if price alone isn't the factor, the lack of quality content shot in native 8K resolution should be another reason not to opt for the TV just yet.

LG Electronics' upcoming V30 smartphone will be the firm's first flagship to sport an OLED display.

We'll know what LG and Samsung, among others, have in store for us once CES 2018 kicks off starting January 9.
