Uber admits that 2.7 million Brits were affected by 2016 mega-hack

In the hack 57 million Uber customers and drivers details were compromised

Separately, prosecutors in the USA have heard that Uber may have hired ex-CIA intelligence operatives to conduct surveillance on its rivals.

Washington state has sued ride-sharing company Uber, saying it broke state law when it failed to notify more than 10,000 drivers that their personal information was accessed as part of a major data breach. The stolen data included customers' email addresses, mobile phone numbers, and the driver's licence numbers of about 600,000 Uber drivers in the US. Now, after some further digging, it seems that 2.7 million of those affected were Uber customers from the UK. "There is no excuse for keeping this information from consumers".

"Washington law is clear: When a data breach puts people at risk, businesses must inform them", Ferguson said in a statement on Tuesday.

The NPC considers Uber as a Personal Information Controller and should provide detailed information on the nature of the incident, the scope of measure, and the remedial measures taken. Under such a theory, he argues that Uber should face a penalty of several millions of dollars.

Idaho gas prices rise, delaying seasonal trends
Gas prices in the region are volatile - increasing, stabilizing and decreasing - throughout the Great Lakes and Central states. The national average has gone up 37.6 cents since a year ago and is also up 3.5 cents since last month.

The senators posed 11 questions including when Uber first learned about the data breach, how many customers were affected, what types of data were compromised, what regulators were notified, and what steps were taken to mitigate potential harm to consumers whose information was comprised.

Last week, news broke that Uber had suffered a major security breach in 2016, which in all, affected 57 million users.

"While Uber has repeatedly asserted that there has been no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident, the concealment of a data breach bears serious consequences under the Data Privacy Act of 2012", according to Privacy Commissioner Raymund Liboro. Regulators from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom will also take part.

Ferguson announced the state's lawsuit hours after developments in a California court case revealed that federal prosecutors are investigating allegations that Uber deployed an espionage team to plunder trade secrets from its rivals.
