SA lose out on Rugby World Cup, France named hosts

South Africa are trying to shore up their support base ahead of a vote on who will secure the 2023 World Cup bid

Government high powerful delegation headed by Deputy President Ramaphosa, Minister of Sport and Recreation TW Nxesi and SARU President Mark Alexander has travelled to London where the final announcement on whether South Africa will host the 2023 Rugby World Cup will be made.

They led after the first round by receiving 18 votes to South Africa's 13, with Ireland eliminated after receiving eight.

"I believe that a tournament in Ireland would have been like no other".

Japan will host the next World Cup in 2019.

"It was not the process which was not fair, but there were some aspects we did not find fair".

South Africa, which staged the tournament in 1995, winning it in their first appearance after missing the first two World Cups because of the apartheid sporting ban, had been favourites after coming out clearly on top of the evaluation report. In that time we developed a world class proposition which reflected positively on Ireland and saw us formally acknowledged as a destination well capable of hosting a superb Rugby World Cup.

Australians Back Legalizing Gay Marriage in Nationwide Vote
At 9.00am AEST this morning, Australian's will know the official result of the same-sex marriage postal survey. Paterson's bill could override all anti-discrimination laws passed by state and territory level legislatures.

Schmidt's position and the IRFU's fight to overturn South Africa's advantage has run as far as chief executive Philip Browne writing a letter to World Rugby to challenge the independent process behind the preferred bidder recommendation.

Argentina, Australia, England, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales had three votes apiece.

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt remains convinced his side's record 30-3 thumping of the Springboks in Dublin on Saturday could swing the vote of World Rugby's member nations today, but that appears to remain a long shot.

"We produced a compelling bid document that earned the unanimous recommendation of the Rugby World Cup Ltd board".

"One has to ask the question, why has the vote gone against the recommendation when most of the unions said they would vote with the recommendation?" "When the Fifa World Cup was held there in 2010, we had a more than 20 percent uptake in players".

"We did everything in our power to bring the tournament to South Africa and we expected to have that right confirmed today".
