Streaming Service Coming Next Year

Streaming Dreams Drove Disney's Interest in Fox Assets

The Fox deal would've given Disney control of a large portion of Fox's TV shows, which Disney would've then presumably moved over to their upcoming streaming service. With the insane level of popularity their properties possess - and with a live-action Star Wars TV series now also announced for the service - it's easy to see why the studio considers this a solid investment. It is expected that all Disney content, including releases from Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, will eventually disappear from Netflix and be exclusively available to stream on the new platform.

Disney plans to price its streaming service below what Netflix charges based on the fact that it will have less content initially, Iger said. Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi instalment that opens next month, is already at work on the project.

Disney's new on demand streaming service will be "substantially" cheaper than Netflix and will launch new Star Wars and Marvel series, according to chief executive Bob Iger.

A similar ESPN streaming product will launch spring 2018, Iger said, fueled by Disney's $3.75 billion acquisition of the BAMtech digital platform from Major League Baseball.

The company's cable revenue for the quarter was flat at $3.95 billion and operating income declined 1% to $1.24 billion from the same quarter a year ago.

The company's overall Q4 revenue slid 3% to US$12.8 billion versus the same quarter a year ago. The brand is strong, the quality of their programming is strong.

Whether Netflix can get away with those prices when Disney enters the market is another question.

Hurricane Irma had an effect on Disney's domestic resort and cruise business, the company said.

The news helped Walt Disney shares reverse a slide in extended trading Thursday. Iger declined to comment on the circulating rumors during the company's earnings call.
