High levels of lead found in fidget spinners

Fidget spinners sold at Target contain lead, advocacy group says

On Target's website, the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Bass" is recommended for ages 14 and over, as well as, 6 and over.

They're one of the biggest toy fads in recent years, but a new report finds high levels of lead in some fidget spinners sold at Target stores and online. The advocacy group requested Target and its developer, Bulls i Toys, LLC to recall the products and investigate the how lead seeped into them.

The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass tested at 33,000 parts per million for lead - some 300 times the 100 parts per million allowable for children's toys.

Target and the company that distributes the spinners, Bulls-i-Toy, both stressed that the spinner is not a toy, and thus doesn't fall under the CPSC rules.

CBS News reported Thursday that Tamara Rubin, a Portland, Oregon, mother who runs the Lead-Safe Mama Facebook page, tests products that parents send to her, including lots of fidget spinners. Another product, the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal, had 1,300 ppm.

"If a fidget spinner is marketed and is primarily intended for children 12 years of age and younger, companies must certify that their product meets toy safety and other standards, including limits for phthalates, lead content, and lead in paint, if applicable, and the U.S Toy Standard, ASTM F963-16", CPSC acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said in an August 10, 2017 statement on fidget spinners. But after some risky incidents involving the popular gizmos, the CPSC issued new fidget spinner safety guidance for consumers and businesses. "The buck has to stop with someone. CPSC stands for the Consumer Product Safety Commission", Kara Cook-Schultz, the nonprofit's toxics director, said in a statement. Now is the time for it to stand up for consumers.

Exposure to high levels of lead can cause developmental problems in children, organ damage and other long-term health issues. "We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys - and yes, these are toys".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that any amount of lead in a child's blood is unsafe, and that contamination is irreversible.
