The unemployment rate in the Wichita metro - Butler, Harvey, Kingman, Sedgwick and Sumner counties - fell to 4.0 percent in September, down from 4.7 percent in August and September 2016, the labor department report said.

"The Department is hosting job fairs and employer engagement events all over the state to assist in matching willing and able workers to hiring employers", said Lindsay Kurrle, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Labor.

The biggest gains were made in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, and Leisure and Hospitality.

The report says the September rate was half a percentage point under the year-ago rate of 3.3 percent.

The total number of unemployed, job-seeking Mainers in September was 26,100, down 1,500 from a year earlier, the department said. The Hoosier state was tied for the 17th lowest jobless rate nationally in September, but was seventh out of the 12 Midwestern states, trailing North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota. "While there are more people working today than any time in the state's history and participating in the robust economy, there are still people who want to work but who may have a barrier to employment".

The seasonally-adjusted Vermont data for September show the Vermont civilian labor force increased by 350 from the prior month's revised estimate. There were 579 new filings for unemployment in the Norfolk area last month, the lowest that number has been since December of 1997.
