Equifax Takes Webpage That Reportedly Pushed Adware Offline

Equifax took down one of its customer assistance web pages, set up to help victims of the megabreach, earlier in the day. "We appreciate your patience during this time and ask that you check back with us soon".

Just last month, Equifax revealed a security breach from May that exposed the personal details of around 145.5 million Americans and 15.2 million people from the UK. Equifax said it took the site offline after suspicious activity was detected. The move follows a report that the page was directing visitors to install fake Adobe Flash updates containing adware.

The firm said it took down the link for credit report assistance temporarily "out of an abundance of caution".

Randy Abrams, an independent security analyst, said he noticed the issue late on Wednesday when he was attempting to check some information in his credit report and a bogus pop-up ad appeared on Equifax's website.

The breach has prompted investigations by multiple federal and state agencies, including a criminal probe by the U.S. Department of Justice, and has led to the departure of the company's chief executive officer, chief information officer, and chief security officer. "When it becomes available or we have more information to share, we will".

Google's mini smart speaker goes into 'Terminator mode'
One of those reviewers is reporting that the Home Mini he was writing about was nearly constantly recording sounds in his home. When the new Google Home Mini was announced recently, Google gave the device out to a number of people to test out.

Abrams shared his findings with Ars Technica and demonstrated them in a video.

The news comes more than a week after former Equifax CEO Richard Smith, who stepped down amid criticism over how the company handled the massive breach, endured a bipartisan grilling at a Senate hearing.

Since news of Equifax's massive data breach broke last month, the company is facing investigations in Canada and the USA, as well as at least two proposed class actions filed in Canada.

Earlier Thursday, GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina introduced a bill meant to "create uniform cybersecurity standards for credit bureaus and submit them to onsite examinations", according to his office.
