Spanish constitution needs overhaul to avert Catalonia crisis

Catalonia- French minister calls for stronger EU to stop independence

"Given the negative implications of independence for economic activity in Catalonia due to its likely exclusion from the European Union and euro area, we think the likelihood of independence is very low", a note from JP Morgan analysts read today.

She stressed her support for Spain's unity but also encouraged more dialogue.

The "Yes" side won the referendum by a landslide, winning 90 per cent of the vote, though less than half of the region's electorate cast their ballots.

"Even though the Scottish government is only devolved, Nicola, the moment they declare independence, should say we're with you and we recognise you".

Spain has plunged into a political crisis since Catalan leaders went forward with an independence referendum on October 1 despite the country's constitutional court outlawing the vote.

Spain's finance minister on Monday blamed the Catalan government for companies moving their headquarters out of the region, while his euro zone colleagues played down the impact of the Spanish crisis on the shared currency.

Barcelona police said 350,000 people gathered, while march organizers claim as many as 930,000 people turned out.

United Nations fears "further exodus" of Muslim Rohingya into Bangladesh

About 10 companies have chose to relocate their legal headquarters from Catalonia to other places in Spain over fears of an unilateral declaration of independence, local media reported on Saturday.

But there was intense speculation on Monday about whether Puigdemont would go ahead with such a provocative move - particularly in the light of a huge rally against independence in Barcelona at the weekend that exposed deep misgivings about his tactics among some sections of Catalan society.

Meanwhile, the regional president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, announced he would appear in the regional parliament on Tuesday to explain the political situation. Rajoy has said the central government could take direct control of Catalonia, which now has a measure of autonomy.

Now, Spain's ruling party appears to have resorted to thinly-veiled threats in a bid to force Catalan leaders to back down as the region's independence bid threatens the breakup of Spain.

Speaking to El Pais on Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said: Spain is not going to be divided and the nation's unity will be maintained. Residents, some 7.5 million people, have also been able to maintain their national language: Catalan.

The worldwide community is also speaking up on the eve of what could be Spain's most dire crisis in recent history. He said this includes the use of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which would allow the central government to take control of the governance of a region "if the regional government does not comply with the obligations of the Constitution".
