Scotland seals dramatic late win over Slovakia

GLASGOW SCOTLAND- SEPTEMBER 30:Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers arrives prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Hibernian at Celtic Park Stadium on September

Scotland's players won't be protected from the "media frenzy" of Sunday's crucial World Cup Qualifier in Slovenia, says Gordon Strachan.

For as much as he savoured the 1-0 win over Slovakia which maintained hopes of reaching the play-offs for a place in the finals next summer, Gordon knows from bitter experience that the promise of success can be so cruelly snatched away at the last gasp of a campaign.

"The man of the match for them was the keeper [Martin Dubravka] - he was magnificent".

An own-goal from former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel gave the Scots a deserved win in the 89th minute.

Scotland, which now has 13 points from its past five games, moves up to second in the table.

Numerous players who finally put Slovakia to the sword on Thursday at Hampden spoke yesterday of the trust they have in... It's been a while since the fans had something to cheer about so it was great we were able to send them home happy on Thursday.

Martin O'Neill extends Republic of Ireland contract
There was no mention as to whether O'Neill's assistant, Roy Keane, will remain with the Irish set-up for the Euro 2020 campaign. The FAI picked a unusual time to announce Martin O'Neill and his backroom team's contract extension until 2020. "I'm delighted.

Puigdemont detached from reality: Spanish deputy PM
Madrid has the power to suspend the semi-autonomous status that Catalonia now enjoys under Spain's system of regional governments. The court said that by allowing the parliament to meet and declare independence would "violate the rights of the party's MPs".

Amid a vociferous atmosphere at Hampden, the hosts had an early penalty claim turned down when Kieran Tierney, playing at right-back, went down under a challenge from Mak, referee Milorad Mazic adjudging there had not been enough contact.

"I landed on my arm and then I couldn't really feel anything so I was anxious a bone might be broken, but the doc seems quite happy with things and he doesn't think there is anything broken", the Liverpool defender added. Now we need to keep believing as we go towards Sunday'.

Craig Gordon had a night to remember at Hampden on Thursday as he won his 50th cap for Scotland to take his place on the SFA's International Roll of Honour.

Despite their man advantage, Scotland, wearing pink, could not force a breakthrough, with Dubravka making impressive saves from Leigh Griffiths either side of half-time.

Griffiths hit the bar with a 25-yard free-kick after 73 minutes before Dubravka made another stunning save, this time from James Morrison.

But just as it looked as though it would go down as another hard-luck story, they grabbed the victor when Ikechi Anya escaped down the right and his cross was turned into his own net by Martin Skrtel.
