Nobel prize in physics winners: LIGO scientists win award for spotting gravitational waves flowing through the Earth

Rainer Weiss, 85, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge and Kip Thorne, 77, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena hatched plans for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in 1984.

Gravitational waves from the black hole collision 1.3 billion years ago were detected on September 14, 2015, by twin Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors in Louisiana and Washington sate, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration team said in February 2016.

Other physicists rate the discovery of gravitational waves among the most important ever in physics. The next detections might come from the merger of two ultra-dense neutron stars, or a neutron star colliding with a black hole, he said. The waves detected by the laureates came from the collision of two black holes about 1.3 billion light-years away.

A fourth detection was made together with a similar European facility, Virgo, near Pisa in Italy, that joined the worldwide hunt for gravitational waves in August this year. The signals from gravitational waves are extremely weak when they reach Earth and therefore require exquisitely accurate measurement.

There were 37 authors from nine Indian Institutions in the scientific publication presenting the first discovery of gravitational waves published in the Physical Review letters by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration.

US scientists Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Physics for their pioneering role in the detection of gravitational waves, prize organisers said on Tuesday.

A major upgrade to LIGO by the USA and its current global partners including the United Kingdom allowed for the detection of gravitational waves in September 2015.

Barish, and Kip S. Thorne split the prize announced by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences early Tuesday.

The first of the 2017 prizes was announced Monday with the medicine prize being given to three Americans studying human body clocks.

India v Australia, 2017: 5th ODI - Statistical Preview
This is not to say that they played badly, they still managed to cross 300, but the victory was agonisingly close for them. I think the wicket was really good to bat on and from that point of view you have to give them a bit of advantage there.

Ben Stokes: England can win Ashes without all-rounder, says Moeen Ali
It's something that when you're a young county player you're always thinking you'd love to be on that sort of tour. England's next global fixture will be against Australia in the first Ashes Test on November 23.

Winners Rainer Weiss, Barry C Barish and Kip S Thorne, were three of the thousand-plus researchers who worked on the project. It's not every day that we manage to open a new window into the universe, but this is exactly what their research has done.

Scientists mostly use the word "hear" when describing gravitational waves, and the data does, in fact, arrive in audio form.

The discovery can pave the way for proving the general theory of relativity, so that we can look deeper and deeper into the universe.

Olga Botner, member of the Nobel Physics Committee at the press conference explained that, "We know the gravitational waves existed, but it's the first time to find them".

"We now witness the dawn of a new field - gravitational wave astronomy", Mr Nils Martensson, acting chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physics, told reporters. And Barish and Weiss stood at the origins of the LIGO project. "I have somewhat ambivalent feelings about the recognition of individuals when so much of this was a team effort", he says.

A year ago the Nobel prize in physics became a British scientists David Taules, Duncan, GILDAN and Michael Costells.

David J. Thouless shared half of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics.
