Donald Trump has lashed out at the mayor of San Juan and other officials in storm-ravaged Puerto Rico, criticising their claims of a slow USA response to the natural disaster which has imperilled the island's future.

Cruz complained in multiple interviews about the USA administration's response to the crisis in Puerto Rico.

Away from Puerto Rico, the opening sketch also brought on Kate McKinnon as Attorney General Jeff Sessions and commented on Trump's attacks on NFL players who kneel during the National Anthem in protest of social and racial injustice. Trump on Saturday blasted her and those in the territory, whom he said "want everything to be done for them". Trump responded to her pleas on Twitter Saturday, arguing that she has poor leadership and she is among those who "want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort".

But on Saturday, Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) officials reported that a third of the island's telecommunications network had been restored, and some 765 gas stations - well over half - had fuel, though it was not clear how much. However 95 percent of people in the USA territory are still without power.

Cruz on Friday pushed back on Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke's characterization of recovery efforts in Puerto Rico as a "good news story". He said 11 regional staging areas have been receiving food and water across the island and that telecommunication has been restored in several key municipalities, including San Juan.
