Engine Alliance, the engine manufacturer for the A380 for the Air France aircraft has commented on the incident. Meanwhile, Air France praised its staff, noting in the statement that "the regularly trained pilots and cabin crew handled this serious incident perfectly".

None of the 520 passengers were injured aboard the Airbus A380, which is the world's largest commercial airliner.

Air France said passengers were being assisted and it was working to re-route them.

The pilot came on over the loudspeaker and said the plane had “lost” one of its engines and would be attempting to land in Canada, said Adams.

Air France said in a statement the plane was forced to divert after "serious damage" to the engine.

The aircraft landed safely at 8:42 a.m. Saturday Pacific time, the airline said, and passengers are being rerouted from the remote Goose Bay airport.

The incident is the most severe since Qantas in 2010 grounded all six of its A380 aircraft after an inflight explosion on one of the plane's engines. However, the flight was late by almost 90 minutes from its scheduled departure time of 10.10 am from Paris.

The flight was diverted to Goose Bay, Canada after the engine failed over Greenland.

According to a report, they were providing meals and captain spoke with passengers. The double-decker aircraft carrying 496 passengers and 24 crew had taken off from Paris yesterday bound for Los Angeles and was several hours into the flight when the blow-out occurred.

Passengers tweeted photos showing severe damage to the engine.

The exact cause of what caused the engine failure has not been determined.
