IPhone X Supply Shortage Caused by Delay in Assembling 'Romeo' Modules

Perhaps most significantly, multiple reports have emerged indicating that one of the key components to the TrueDepth camera that is essential to Face ID's operation, codenamed "Romeo", is proving so hard to manufacture that it's causing a bottleneck in iPhone X production.

Apple says the iPhone X also uses its "neural engine" to learn to recognize faces, even if they change by adding facial hair or glasses, or if they're puffy from a hangover. By matching against the 3D image of your face, for example, Apple says you can't simply spoof the system with a 2D photograph, which doesn't have any depth. The company's first public demo of Face ID didn't go that smoothly, after all - at one point, the demonstrator had to skip the face scan and enter his password instead. Apple assures the data gathered, including the mathematical representation of your face created using 30,000 infrared dots, is encrypted and only available on what Apple calls a "Secure Enclave".

The iPhone X does allow third-party apps to let you sign in via Face ID, but these outside developers only receive notifications from Apple that you've been authenticated or not.

What if someone makes a really good mask?

"The probability that a random person in the population could look at your iPhone X and unlock it using Face ID is approximately 1 in 1,000,000 (versus 1 in 50,000 for Touch ID)[.] The probability of a false match is different for twins and siblings that look like you as well as among children under the age of 13, because their distinct facial features may not have fully developed".

To use Face ID with Apple Pay purchases, users will have to confirm intent to pay by double-clicking the side button, like on the Apple Watch.

"Face ID data doesn't leave your device, and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else".

Can I turn Face ID off and use my passcode?

Still, in truth, no security technology is completely secure. It also cops to the reality that the tech-powering Face ID may not be as all-powerful as Apple first suggested.

"People shouldn't look at this and think it can't be defeated", Fu said. As for Face ID itself, Apple says it has augmented its AI training over its development to ensure that it works accurately across a range of ethnicities, helping to preemptively guard against frustrations and controversies that have sometimes plagued other facial recognition systems. The mobile giant appears to have learned from its mistakes after a user embarrassingly fooled its Touch ID fingerprint system just days after the release of the iPhone 5s. If you're having trouble with Face ID, you can select which images you want to send for diagnostics, the company said.

"You're giving bad guys more and more incentive to try to compromise that secure enclave", he said.
