The presidential directive means the federal government will spend a minimum of $200 million in grant funding to expand STEM and computer science education. Microsoft and Amazon are pledging similar amounts, with Lockheed Martin contributing $25 million and other companies making smaller contributions, according to the Internet Association, an industry lobbying group that organized the effort. -Explore administrative actions that will add or increase focus on Computer Science in existing K-12 and post-secondary programs. Money for the grants has been appropriated by Congress, officials said.

While President Donald Trump's hardline base attacks Google, Facebook and Twitter for supposedly censoring conservative voices, the president and major tech firms are embarking on a joint project to improve the nation's education in science, technology, engineering and math.

"We have a major diversity problem in the tech industry", Trump said at an event inside a Gilbert-owned building at Campus Martius. The Department of Education, therefore, should prioritize helping districts recruit and train teachers capable of providing students with a rigorous education in STEM fields, focusing in particular on Computer Science.

The effort, which will include a "substantial pledge" from the private sector in an announcement coming Tuesday, was spearheaded by Ivanka Trump, a senior adviser to the President.
