Violent Crime Spikes In Michigan; Half The Murders In Detroit

Crime in 2017: A Preliminary Analysis | Brennan Center for Justice

Violent crime increased in the United States for a second consecutive year in 2016, remaining near historically low levels but pushed upward in part by an uptick in killings in some major cities, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics made public Monday. Craig has said for years that the data isn't accurate and that the city's new $9 million system is far more complete.

Nationally, the number of murders non-negligent manslaughter increased by 8.6 percent, while aggravated assaults and rapes increased by 5.1 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.

Reported violent crimes also increased in four of New England's eight largest cities, growing by 19% in Stamford, 11% in Bridgeport, 2% in Boston and 1% in Worcester.

Erie County's violent crime rate previous year stayed virtually the same as in 2015, with 404 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents.

For one, we still don't know whether the rise is a blip, or not, for a country that has had historically low-violent crime levels in recent years. "The Department of Justice is committed to working with our state, local, and tribal partners across the country to deter violent crime, dismantle criminal organizations and gangs, stop the scourge of drug trafficking, and send a strong message to criminals that we will not surrender our communities to lawlessness and violence".

Communities of different sizes, from rural regions to suburbs to large urban centers, reported an increase in the number of violent crimes.

The FBI defines violent crimes as homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults. The number of murders committed rose almost 9 percent, while aggravated assaults and rapes were up about 5 percent over the previous year.

The rates of violent crimes reported to municipal police agencies rose in several communities previous year, including in the Village and Town of Hamburg, Lockport, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Orchard Park, the City of Tonawanda, Evans, the Town of Niagara and West Seneca.

"There's no question that there are pockets of increased violence across the country", said Adam Gelb, director of the Public Safety Performance Project at The Pew Charitable Trusts. And within Chicago, it's a small number of streets fueling that surge.

John Pfaff, a Fordham University law professor and economist, says about 20 percent of the national homicide increase was just in the city of Chicago.

Sessions and President Donald Trump have been outspoken about their goal to cut crime in the United States. "And we must do it together", Mr. Sessions said in a statement Monday.

Overall violent crime rose 4.1 percent past year, while property crime fell 1.3 percent compared to 2015.

Experts, however, called into question whether the increases for 2015 and 2016 would be part of any longer-term trend.

At the same time, violent crimes fell by more than 10 percent in Washington, D.C., and by significant percentages in Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Detroit.
