Attorney General: 1.1 million Iowans hit by Equifax breach

Is Canada ready for a new data breach notification regime

Equifax, one of the three major nationwide credit reporting agencies, recently announced a serious data breach that could impact millions of Washington consumers.

"We were notified by the company", Fincke said.

Equifax shares sank to a 19-month low on Wednesday after the MA attorney general announced that she was preparing to sue the credit bureau over one of the biggest data breaches in history.

It is informing about 10,000 of its members that they may have had sensitive data compromised by the massive Equifax cybersecurity breach.

I'm not a big fan of credit freezes.

If your information was part of the leak, you'll see the following message: "Thank You - Based on the information you provided, we believe that your personal information may have been impacted by this incident".

The company has promised free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for one year.

Equifax created a website that allows you check.

He says, "Everyone is entitled to a free credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies and you're also entitled to a free security freeze".

Equifax said that it would send letters to about 390,000 of the victims who either had credit card numbers or credit dispute statements affected. Since that's the information needed to open new accounts, such as loans and credit cards, the breach puts consumers at risk for new account fraud for the foreseeable future. This prohibits a credit reporting agency from releasing any information from your credit report without written authorization and makes it harder for an identity thief to access credit in your name.

Equifax has set up a website for consumers to check whether they are among those affected: www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job.

Monitor your credit reports.

11, 2017, Equifax said it has made changes to address customer complaints since it disclosed a week earlier that it exposed vital data on about 143 million Americans. Equifax says those clauses do not apply in this case, something Brown says is "simply not enough".

You can always view your credit report for free once a year at AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 877-322-8228.
