Florida nursing home deaths increase Irma's toll, and raise questions

'Potentially catastrophic' Irma barrels toward Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico

At least six people have died and 115 people were evacuated from a hot South Florida nursing home, which is still without power after Hurricane Irma.

Elderly residents were evacuated Wednesday morning from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills which lost power during the storm. The local officials said, the hurricane has taken the lives of five people at South Florida nursing home, the nursing home was without air conditioning. According to the authorities, people were being evacuated from the facility to save places.

County courts are remain closed except for first appearance, shelter, and juvenile detention hearings. Then, police responded to a 911 call and found three people dead and others in struggling health. She said her sister could not talk or walk.

Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said the building has been sealed off while a criminal investigation is conducted, WSVN reported. More than 800 utility workers are trying to restore electricity to the more than 100,000 customers who began the day here with no lights or air conditioning. Several other residents are reported to be in critical condition.

An announcement from the nursing home, the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, affirmed that it had a "delayed power inability to the transformer which fueled the office's aerating and cooling framework because of the tropical storm".

"It's one of the things we're doing aggressively", Scott said.

Though the facility has a generator, it was unclear if it was operational, and Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told reporters that the residents died from the lack of air conditioning.

In the dark: According to state officials, more than 50,000 customers were without power in Monroe County, which includes the Keys. Jon says that "apparently the facility lost some, but not all of its power after Hurricane Irma". "As with millions of other Floridians, our centers are coping with the loss of power and infrastructure in the communities that were most affected by the devastation", the statement reads.

Those on the west coast, where Hurricane Irma made landfall, will likely have power restored by September 22, according to the company.

At least five people died and more than a dozen were treated after breathing carbon monoxide fumes from generators in the Orlando, Miami and Daytona Beach areas.

However, the facility is under the evacuation order, but the evacuation needs to come in effect.

The number of people without electricity in the steamy late-summer heat dropped to 9.5 million - just under half of Florida's population.

Retired nurse Flora Mitchell's 58-year-old sister Vanda Wilson has been as resident at Rehabilitation Center since suffering a stroke, which left her unable to speak or move, a decade ago.
