Hurricane Irma: Charlotte County shelters are full, more opened in Sarasota County

Two manatees are rescued from Sarasota Bay when the water receded

Hurricane Irma's fierce winds washed Florida's western waters out to sea, exposing helpless manatees and hundreds of yards of soggy seabed near Tampa and Sarasota.

Sechler said the group tried to move the massive animals, to no avail.

Several people posted photos of the animals that were stuck on the shore Sunday during an usually low tide created just before the hurricane made its way up the Florida coast and slammed into the Sarasota region.

Clavijo posted a video on Facebook showing the team of rescuers struggling to move one of the big manatees with their basic tools.

A pair of manatees apparently were also caught off guard and found themselves stranded by the rapid retreat of waters in the bay. "We called every service we could think of, but no one answered", one member of the group writes on Facebook.

He said, "We don't want anybody to risk their lives; they were trying to do the right thing but it's not worth it".

"We actually reached out to some friends who work for the county that ended up going out there and rescuing them", Michael Sechler, one of the passersby who discovered the manatees, told HuffPost.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office wrote on Twitter that deputies helped rescue the sea cows, but did not provide further details. "We just let nature take its course".

They ended up at a bay on Whitfield Avenue and USA 41 in Sarasota where the water had receded leading the local wildlife stranded. It was an "absolutely amazing" rescue and "shows what people can do when they come together", says Faradini-Campos.
