Modi's 'hard line stance' pushing India into war

The stand-off emerged after Chinese troops were stopped by the Indian Army from constructing roads along the Doklam border. While India has repeatedly said that war wasn't an option to solve the crisis, China has frequently though unofficially warned of using the military option.

Earlier on Friday, MEA said that the Indian Government remains committed to ensure the security of its citizens and territory and will continue to engage with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels to find a mutually acceptable solution.

"Six ministries and institutions made remarks on the incident within the past 24 hours", the article in the daily run by the Communist Party of China said.

Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Institute of International Relations at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, wrote in the Global Times: "China will not allow the military standoff between China and India in Doklam to last for too long, and there may be a small-scale military operation to expel Indian troops within two weeks".

Regarding Beijing's claims that it had informed New Delhi on May 18 and again on June 8 that it would build a road in that area, he said: "I have read that statement".

"The chances of doing so are increasing as the Indian side is still saying one thing and doing another", he told the Global Times.

He said that India and the U.S. have an "implicit defence relationship" and that the two countries can safely rely on each other. "And no matter how the standoff ends, Sino-Indian ties have been severely damaged and strategic distrust will linger".

"The Modi government's hard line stance is sustained by neither laws nor strength".

"Its move is irresponsible to regional security and is gambling against India's destiny and its people's well-being".

In New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told Parliament on Thursday that India was concerned about China's actions affecting the tri-junction boundary point between Bhutan, China and India as well as the India-China border.

"We are not negotiating only on Doklam, we are talking about bilateral relations in entirety". She underlined that China had been contributing to India's economic growth and had huge stakes in the country. That's why Doklam is not the lone issue. When asked about the possibility of any backchannel discussions with the United States on the Doklam standoff, Desai said that there were not just backchannel negotiations in play but it was being dealt with at the highest level by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who talk directly to each other.

While China continues to raise the ante over the Doklam standoff, India says it will engage with Beijing diplomatically to resolve the border standoff and that war is not a solution.

The plateau is strategically significant as it gives China access to the so-called "chicken neck" - a thin strip of land connecting India's northeastern states with the rest of the country. However, since the start of the standoff, Chinese diplomats and media have tried to provoke India.
