Google Aims to Reinvent How We Discover the News

Google to add 'news feed' to website and app

Google has taken control of its knowledge of you to personalise its mobile app even further with the launch of the new Google Feed.

The response to Feed has so far been relatively quiet - likely due to the fact that the change is minor on the user's side, and that it is now only available in the US. You'll see cards with things like sports highlights, top news, engaging videos, new music, stories to read and more. This move by Google seems similar to that of the Facebook which has already rolled out similar personalized news feed for the users. Sure, we all have many things in common, but none of us has quite the same mix of passions, interests and goals as the next person. This new feed will be a collection of stories that you would find interesting.

The feed is available in the Google app for iOS and Android, and could potentially keep users who may otherwise scroll through Facebook's news feed in Google's app longer.

This story was widely reported in the tech press, but the Guardian made a decision to take things further, claiming that Google was on the verge of unveiling a "radical" change to it homepage on the desktop.

What you need to know about OJ Simpson parole hearing
The former star running back was arrested when one of the most notorious vehicle chases ever was televised around the world. A parole board hearing in the USA state of Nevada is due to decide whether OJ Simpson should be released from prison.

Google feed is here, and it will show you the news you want to read about. You can also tap on a header to exit the feed and search as usual. This trial began in December 2016, and the full news feed for smartphones will be added to apps in the U.S. first.

The "personalised feed section" as announced by the most sought after search engine in the world, Google has become the talk of the tech-world in no time.

While we've been getting better at understanding your interests, it hasn't always been easy for you to choose new topics for your feed. By tapping that x, you can mention if you're not actually interested in the topic. However, it's worth mentioning that if you have a Pixel or any device that has Google Now/Feed built into the launcher, you won't see those tabs. But it raises more questions about just how much Google knows about us, and how it uses that information to deliver ads.
