Following the detention and death of University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier - and amid dictator Kim Jong Un's continued nuclear ambitions - the US government is set to ban American citizens from traveling to North Korea, according to reports on Friday.

However, the United States has not confirmed the news.

The US will soon ban Americans from traveling to North Korea.

The Reuters agency reported that information on the prepared ban had been confirmed by China's Koryo Tours operator that also organizes trips to North Korea.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had chose to impose "geographical travel restriction" for North Korea, the officials said, which would make it illegal to use US passports to enter the country.

Rowan Beard, of Young Pioneer Tours, said the Embassy was urging all United States nationals to depart immediately and was trying to check on the number of USA tourists left in the country.

The announcement comes after the death of USA student Otto Warmbier, who was held captive for 17 months in North Korea. The state department continues to have an alert dated 9 May strongly warning U.S. citizens not to travel to North Korea.

South Korea on Friday urged North Korea to accept its offer of military talks aimed at reducing tensions along the border, describing it as a "very urgent task".

US officials say North Korea will become the only country in the world Americans are banned from visiting. He died days later at the age of 22.

U.S. Army veteran Brian Sayler, 40, who travelled to North Korea for six days in May, said he opposed the pending ban.

North Korea may be preparing for another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or intermediate range missile test, USA intelligence sources told CNN on Thursday. But the US State Department has strongly warned Americans against travelling there.

There are no indications the North's economy has suddenly improved since late 2011 when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took power on the sudden death of his father and long-time leader Kim Jong-il, an official said. The Hawaiian Emergency Management Agency reportedly wants all residents to be able to react both quickly and safely in case North Korea does launch nuclear missiles.

Daily Star Online revealed that Young Pioneer Tours would continue visiting the country regardless, but not with USA citizens.

Travellers wanting to visit the North must go with a tour company.

He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour.

In all, about 5,000 Western tourists have visited North Korea each year.
