President Trump's travel ban partially unblocked

Seattle. The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday that President Donald Trump's travel ban on visitors from Iran Libya Somalia Sudan

The Supreme Court on Monday said it will allow the Trump administration to go forward with a limited version of its ban on travel from six mostly Muslim countries.

Reacting to Monday's ruling, Trump said he felt vindicated by what he called "a clear victory for our national security". "It is true that the travel ban is allowed to go into effect, but the Supreme Court substantially narrowed who could be denied entry".

The Refugee Justice League said the Supreme Court's action allows a limited version of President Trump's ban on travelers from six mostly Muslim countries to take effect. "I want people who can love the United States and all of its citizens, and who will be hardworking and productive".

But rejecting the blanket nature of the ban, the justices declared that those with good reason to enter the U.S. could continue to do so.

The court's decision also allows in immigrants from these countries who have a family member already in the US, an offer of employment from a USA company or an invitation to lecture to an American audience.

The court's opinion explained the kinds of relationships people from the six countries must demonstrate to obtain a U.S. visa.

"Because these refugees have close ties to individuals within the United States, we believe there is a strong possibility they will still be admitted", Hornbeck said.

"A foreign national who wishes to enter the [US] to live with or visit a family member ... clearly has such a relationship".

"With many groups, it's clear-cut from the type of visa: Anyone coming in on family visa or employment visa, by their terms it's clear they have a bona fide relationship", he said.

Bill Cosby jury to hear more of his deposition testimony
Camille Cosby was seated in the front row of trial spectators, a tight smile on her face and a publicist leading the way. Constand and another accuser, Kelly Johnson, told jurors last week that Cosby gave them pills to help them "relax".

"The highest court in the land has clearly affirmed that the Trump Administration can not block people who are coming in on family visas and who have their families members here", Adams said. The next day, as protests rang, a judge in NY blocked a portion of the ban. Their dissent could foreshadow a tough road ahead for opponents of the travel ban.

The court's "good reason" test for entry to the country likely means there will not be a repeat of the mass protests, emotional outpourings and the caravans of lawyers setting up in airport terminals sparked by Trump's first draft.

The President then signed a second order in early March that excluded Iraq from the list of countries.

"I fear that the Court's remedy will prove unworkable", Justice Clarence Thomas wrote.

The court said it doesn't apply to people with a "bona fide connection" to the US, which would include foreigners and refugees with families ties, or people who come on a work or student visa, for example.

The court tempered its ruling by saying the ban could not be implemented for now against people who have personal links to the United States, citing the examples of foreign nationals wishing to visit family or students accepted to attend university.

"The most interesting thing to see is whether the court, next fall, considers whether the ban is targeted to a specific religion", Sugarman said.

CBS Local- The United States Supreme Court chose to allow parts of President Donald Trump's controversial travel ban to go into effect immediately, while also allowing to hear arguments for and against it in October.

The Supreme Court would not hear arguments on the legality of the ban until October. The effect of that ruling is likely to fall most heavily on refugees from some of the world's most desperate places, while continuing to allow a flow of visitors from the six countries singled out by the Trump administration - Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen - albeit in diminished numbers.
