Petra Kvitova hails 'amazing' Birmingham title just six months after knife attack

Australian tennis player Daria Gavrilova

Kvitova slipped a set down to the Australian - herself enjoying a fine return to the sport after a time away playing cricket - but roared back to win by taking the decider in convincing fashion.

Building on her advantage, Kvitova followed up with a second break before serving out strongly with an ace to seal her remarkable comeback success and despite tasting defeat Barty was full of admiration for her opponent.

But on Friday was Kvitova's turn to receive the applause, as she revealed that many parts of her incisive grass court game are in working order and that many things may still be possible despite enduring problems with the injured hand.

But she produced a strong performance in the second half of the decisive set to claim victory after Barty had started stronger.

"I couldn't have imagined having a better comeback than I am having now". It was a dream to play on the grass this season, I made it'.

The 27-year-old will head into the third Grand Slam tournament of the season as one of the favourites for the title, with reigning champion Serena Williams taking time out from the sport to give birth to her first child, and last year's runner-up Angelique Kerber having a hard season.

Al-Quds Day rallies in Iran overwhelmed by anti-Israel sentiments
Tel Aviv withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but has been keeping the coastal enclave under a crippling siege and regular deadly offensives.

"It was just nice to get a couple of good matches and it's nice to be able to come up against top players leading into a slam (Wimbledon) and try and test myself against the world's best", Barty said. But she remained reluctant to agree that she was now one of the players who could win Wimbledon.

She then decided to make her return to the tennis court 12 months ago at the 50k ITF tournament in Eastbourne where she managed to reach the semi-finals.

Breaks of serve were exchanged in the middle of the opening set, which Sevastova took, but Goerges fought back and broke in the sixth game of the second set before holding her service games to level up the match.

Whatever happens, Kvitova was already delighted with her progress.

Muguruza called for her coach, sought to swing the ball around, and eventually just tried to scrap as best she could. "She's such an inspiration", said the Australian.

"I will keep playing this way and I know that sooner or later I will get the chance of getting another trophy", said Muguruza, for whom this tournament has been mental rehab after her title-losing trauma in Paris two weeks ago. "I like slicing it around on the grass, and I didn't do much wrong".
